The island is about 8 km long and 4 km wide. To the west, in Yateagama, caves are partially covered by the sea during high tides. Several sites are worth a visit, including the Ernie Pyle monument, named after an American war correspondent killed by the Japanese a few days before the end of the war. The sites are mainly located in the interior of the island where you can easily walk between the sugar cane and pineapple fields and some old rustic farms. The best thing to do is to rent a bicycle in the town. Take the ferry at Toguchi Shin-kō for a 35-minute ride. Several ferries a day.
