Itoman is a small port located about 12 km from Naha. It is the fishing and sugarcane center of South Okinawa. Itoman's fishing families often adopted children of poor farmers from other parts of Okinawa. Not far from the center is the Torii of Hakugin-dō, Itoman's protective shrine, and the graves of the Kōchi clan (Kōchi Bara Monchū no haka), which hold the ashes of over 2,500 people. Itoman is also where the dragon boats are made, used in the famous Naha race every May. South of Itoman, you can go to Nashiro Beach to sunbathe.
