The island is located 90 kilometers west of the main island of Okinawa, 35 minutes by plane from Naha, and about 2 hours by ferry from Naha from Tomari-kō. The island has retained its charm, with its sugarcane fields and beautiful pine forest scenery. In the village of Nakazato, women can still be seen weaving kume jima tsumugi silk, which unfortunately is no longer the case on other islands.
