Nestled at the foot of magnificent natural landscapes and the meandering Colorado River, Moab is home to 5,500 inhabitants, plus thousands of tourists. The discovery of uranium and vanadium mines in the 1910s quickly turned the area into a mining town. Mining declined in the 1980s. The town then turned to tourism, while continuing to host the film industry. Now a favorite destination for mountain bikers and rock climbers, it's the starting point for Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, Dead Horse Point State Park and the Colorado River, which can be descended for several kilometers.
