CHIESETTA SAN MARCO
Church attributed to Gabrielle Riccardi, the first architect of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Lecce
Next to the Palazzo del Sedile, this tiny church was founded in 1543 by a Venetian colony in Lecce, which had its stores on the site of today's Piazza Sant'Oronzo. Attributed to Gabriele Riccardi, the architect of Lecce's Santa Croce basilica, it was dedicated to St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, as recalled by the winged lion sculpted into the tympanum of the portal. The chiesetta evokes the privileged ties between Lecce and the Serenissima. Today, it is the headquarters of a veterans' association.
