The capital of La Guajira is the only important city of the department. It is a quiet base to prepare its excursions in the peninsula. There are a few colonial buildings and most of the Wayuu handicrafts exposed on the malecón, the avenue that runs along the beach : mantas (traditional long dresses), mochilas (colored bags that are worn across the shoulder) and chinchorros (large colored hammocks). The Muelle Turístico, a long wooden pontoon that juts out into the sea, is a must to admire the glowing sunsets.
