With nearly 32,500 inhabitants, Juneau is the largest city in Southeast Alaska and is its administrative capital. Long inhabited by the Tlingit Indians, it is only during the gold rush at the end of the 19th century led by the prospector Joe Juneau that the city takes its current name. The Indian culture is particularly present here, with many stores selling Indian art. Its 770,000 visitors (mostly cruise passengers) are a major player in the local economy. Clinging to the side of Mount Juneau, the town has typical wooden houses, the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas with its gold-leafed bell tower. It remains the unavoidable gateway to the Southeast.
