La Grande Odyssée is the French Savoie-Mont-Blanc sled dog race. It has been organized since 2005, on the initiative of Nicolas Vanier, the famous adventurer who ran the Yukon Quest. The 800-kilometer race passes through 22 winter sports resorts. It starts in Les Carroz, on the first Saturday in January, and finishes 10 days later in Bessans-Bonneval-sur-Arc. 10 stages are planned for this highly publicized race. It is reputed to be the most difficult of the races, due to its steep gradients, and has an international dimension.
