ODAWARA CASTLE
The town of Odawara was historically built around the castle. What remains today is the keep, which is at the heart of a public garden featuring a number of attractions linked to the history of samurai and ninjas. The castle contains documents on the city's history. Hojo-sōun (1432-1519), a member of the Hojo clan, one of the most powerful of the civil war period, attacked the castle built shortly before, in 1494, and settled there. In 1578, Hōjō Ujimasa, refusing to submit to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was attacked at Odawara and committed suicide.
