This magnificent botanical garden, in which rare species are preserved, was part of the residence of the shōgun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa (1646-1709), assassinated by his wife. A hospital for the poor was built here during the Edo period to treat the most destitute with the shōgun's plants, which grew in the botanical garden. In the northwest of the garden, a Meiji colonial-style wooden building of delicate architecture still stands.
