NATIONAL YOYOGI GYMNASIUM
Built by Kenzō Tange for the 1964 Olympic Games, the stadium had become the new showcase for post-war Japan. The suspended roof was a technical feat that demonstrated Tange's mastery of concrete. Its flared shape is reminiscent of the massive roofs of traditional buildings. Its architecture is considered one of the twentieth century's greatest feats. In 2021, the handball events of the Olympic Games will be held here behind closed doors. The building has been designated an "important cultural asset" in Japan.
