UENO TOSHOGU
Built in 1617 and restored in 1651, this Shintō shrine was dedicated to Ieyasu Tokugawa by the emperor. Today, it is designated an important cultural property for its typical Edo-era gongen-zukuri architectural style. The entrance walls are decorated by the painter Tanyū Kanō. The Chinese-style gate, the Kara-mon, is adorned with dragons, who are said to drink from the park's pond at night. To the east is a 5-storey pagoda, Gojūno-tō, 35 m high, transferred in 1957 from Kan'ei-ji monastery. The ensemble blends into Ueno Park.
