Grootfontein ("big fountain" in Afrikaans) is located 452 km north of Windhoek, 256 km west of Tsumkwe and 250 km before Rundu. It fell under German control in 1895 and has retained a strong Germanic architectural influence, including an old fortress. It is also the closest town to sleep comfortably and stock up on provisions before entering the Bushmanland or continuing on to the Kavango and Zambézi. Agricultural centre of the region and a passing town, it has many shops: banks, bakery, small bookshop, bazaar, mini-markets and a large supermarket, very well stocked.
