An early Christian hexagonal baptistery, the remains of which were revealed when an elementary school was built in 1956.
During the construction of a primary school in 1956, excavations revealed the remains of an early Christian baptistery. Because of its hexagonal shape, the original baptistery is the only one to be found north of the Loire. The foundations, 9 meters wide, and the basin, 60 centimeters deep, remain today. Estimated to date from the 6th century, it was classified as a Historic Monument on July1, 1958

Le Baptistère de Portbail 50580 Port-Bail-Sur-Mer
Le Baptistère de Port-Bail-Sur-Mer se trouve derrière la Mairie. C'est une construction inhabituelle et curieuse. Il est également intéressant à découvrir en visite libre car le bassin et l’intérieur du baptistère s'observent seulement depuis la grille fermée. Des panneaux apportent des explications très instructives. A voir par curiosité !
