Located on the heights of Lausanne, the Château Saint-Maire, a veritable fortified castle, was built between 1394 and 1430 at the request of the Lausanne bishops as their new residence, as the former residence, now the Musée historique, was not large enough. Since 1803, the building has been the seat of the Vaud cantonal authorities and is therefore not open to the public. A detour from the cathedral is worthwhile, however, to admire its exterior architecture and the statues around it.
