The church is only 42 m long, and its width at the transept is 25 m.
Attested in 1056 in a charter of William the Conqueror, it was falling into ruin at the end of the 15th century when Geoffroy Herbert decided to rebuild it. His death in 1510 stopped the work, but the lantern was completed in 1581. Because of the tight space between Rue Saint-Pierre and the present Rue Geoffroy-de-Montbray, the church is only 42 m long and its width at the transept is 25 m. Despite its modest dimensions, a sense of space is felt when one enters.
