The Struve Arc is a remarkable and historic chain of geodetic triangulations, stretching over 2,820 km from Hammerfest (Norway) to the Black Sea, crossing ten countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldavia. Built between 1816 and 1855 by the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve, its aim was to measure with extreme precision the first long portion of a meridian arc - thus enabling the size and shape of the Earth to be accurately determined.
