The town of Pyay has played a key role in Burmese history. As an economic centre, it is located at the crossroads of Upper and Lower Burma. Home of Burmese culture, it is within its walls and in the heart of the ancient capitals that the Pyu civilization developed, at the origin of today's Burmese people.
