The town of Pyay has played a key role in Burmese history. As an economic centre, it is located at the crossroads of Upper and Lower Burma. Home of Burmese culture, it is within its walls and in the heart of the ancient capitals that the Pyu civilization developed, at the origin of today's Burmese people. Pyay consists of two distinct districts, each of which bears witness to a development inscribed in a given period of history. Old Pyay houses the remains of the ancient Pyu capital, Sri Ksetra, the small village of Hmawza and its museum, which sheds little light on the Pyu civilization. As for the new Pyay, it is a small Burmese style town, crossed by the railway that links Upper and Lower Burma. Bogyoke Aung San Road, the main artery, connects the statue of the beloved general of the people and the Payagyi pagoda in the northwest
