100 km north of Kasama is the small town of Mbala, which was called Abercorn in colonial times. During World War I, it was strategic for Northern Rhodesia because it was close to the border of German East Africa (now Tanzania). It was here that the German forces surrendered and relinquished control over East Africa. Mbala is also the highest town in Zambia, perched at over 1,600 meters on the edge of the great Rift Valley on high plateaus. The climate is temperate, with nights sometimes very cool during the southern winter. Mbala is especially worth a stop for its museum.
