Formerly called Xieng Khouang, it is home to about 4,000 inhabitants. The "old city" is linked to Phonsavan by a 35 km paved road. Founded by Chao Noi Muang, the city was under the supervision of the royal family and was the capital of the province until 1975. Before the war, it contained temples remarkable for their splendor. The colonial buildings testified to the French protectorate, but the bombings of 1968 to 1970 destroyed almost everything. It is a good base to visit the Plain of Jars, but be aware that there are few hotel structures. Motorcycles and scooters are a good way to explore the area
