It is the capital of the province of Xieng Khouang, at an altitude of 1,500 m in the middle of mountainous massifs. It has about 60,000 inhabitants and stretches from east to west over a little more than 3 km. From an archaeological point of view, the region is the cradle of a civilization dating back more than three millennia, as evidenced by the famous stone-cut jars, which were probably used for funerary purposes (discovery of bones and traces of cremation). The three main megalithic sites constitute the major attraction of the site. The nearby border with Vietnam (Nong Het) has been open since 2003 to foreigners with a visa.
