A town of 80 000 inhabitants, it is located 50 km from Sana'a. The stone architecture of Thoulla is one of the most elegant in Yemen. The high houses are built with stone-carved stone stone stones hanging over each other without any mortar mortar. The facades are adorned with scie or créneaux teeth separating the floors. Round windows, covered with alabaster, gentle curves of walls with, above, astonishing overhangs, show which fine artists were the Yemeni builders. The name of the city was inherited from the first family, the Al Thoulleya, a wealthy farm family. This city is an essential part of a visit to Yemen (the old centre is almost intact). It was entirely paved by UNESCO three years ago with the utmost respect for its spirit and history. You can spend several hours wandering in its old streets and Jewish neighbourhoods featuring two houses whose last floors are linked by a stone bridge. The old mosque, with its large pool with?, is splendid. It flows through a source in Thoulla, where women come to search for water in the old town itself. Men cannot go and you will be asked not to photograph. You will also have a beautiful view from the oldest house in the city which, unfortunately! , has already almost fallen into ruins. Be aware that Thoulla extends outside its ancient ramparts and that, for the anecdote, there was a time when the Jewish population was forced to settle out of them and thus move. You will have the opportunity to be very well received by young people, speaking French or English, who will be happy to accompany you and who know very well the history of their city. The seven doors surrounding the city once opened at 6 a. m. and closed at 20 p. m.
