A Gothic basilica dedicated to St. Afre, the patron saint of the city of Augsburg.
The Basilica of St. Ulrich and St. Afra dates largely from the late Gothic period (its bulbous bell tower visible from afar, however, dates from the late 16th century). It was built over the grave of St. Afra, a Christian martyr († 304), patron saint of the city, who - depending on the version - was beheaded or burned alive in Augsburg. The Augsburg bishops Simpert († 807) and Ulrich († 973) were also later buried here.
