Augsburg is a historic city well worth a visit. Founded by the Romans in 15 B.C., it is the oldest city in Bavaria and the second oldest in Germany. With around 300,000 inhabitants, it is Bavaria's third-largest city. Augsburg is known for its Renaissance architecture, with famous landmarks such as the Town Hall and the Perlach Tower. The city is also home to museums dedicated to famous personalities such as Jacob Fugger the Rich, Leopold Mozart (father of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart) and Bertolt Brecht. Other not-to-be-missed attractions include the Fuggerei, the oldest social complex in the world, the Augsburg Puppet Theater and its adjacent museum, as well as the churches of St. Anne, St. Ulrich and the Cathedral. Augsburg's charming Old Town, with its canals along the River Lech and its picturesque city walls, is also worth a visit.
