The margraves' residence has a number of ceremonial rooms: the banqueting hall, the cabinet of mirrors, the princely chambers, etc.
The residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach is without doubt the most important building in the city. Its plain exterior conceals 27 luxurious state rooms, which visitors can explore on a guided tour.
History. This baroque palace was not built from scratch, as evidenced by the moat on the northeast side and the Gothic room where the ticket office is located. The residence has retained its Baroque character because the margraviate ceased to exist at the end of the 18th century. The last Margrave Alexander, who had no children, decided to sell his lands to his Prussian cousins and live a new life with his mistress in England, relegating Ansbach to the status of a second home among many others. In 1806, Ansbach passed from the Hohenzollerns to the Wittelsbachs and became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Today, part of the palace houses the offices of the Middle Franconian District.
The ceremonial rooms. The margraves preferred to live on thesecond floor, which was more comfortable, but thefirst floor of the palace contains the three apartments designed for ceremonial purposes: the margrave's apartments, the margravine's apartments and the apartments for distinguished visitors. The most impressive rooms include the two-story banquet hall, the mirror cabinet, and the tile room with its 2,800 tiles from the former Ansbach tile factory.
