A modern, playful and humorous museum devoted entirely to the history of Bavaria.

This recent museum - opening in June 2019 - is entirely dedicated to Bavaria and its history. Its ultra-modern architecture places it firmly in the present, and can be read as a window on the city.

We enter a gigantic, luminous hall where we are greeted by a monumental lion - the symbol of Bavaria - raising a mug of beer, displaying the museum's logo. The tone is set: this is a museum for the 21st century, with a touch of humor thrown in for good measure. The 30-minute video on the first floor can be overlooked. Entitled Was vorher geschah (which could be translated as "In previous episodes"), it retraces the history of Bavaria from antiquity to the early 19th century at breakneck speed. Despite its remarkable technology (360° screen), the video is rather buffoonish and in Bavarian dialect... And it's not free of clichés. Anyway, let's move on.

Upstairs, thepermanent exhibition is far more interesting. It tells the story of Bavaria from the creation of the kingdom in 1806 to the present day. The exhibition is packed with interactive modules. Highlights include the Bavarian constitution of 1818 (the Magna Charta Bavariae), a rococo sleigh of Ludwig II, adorned with a gold-covered naiad, the crown of the Queen of Bavaria, and much more. A well-done French media guide will accompany you on your tour. You'll soon know all about the ups and downs of Bavarian history!
