The former Benedictine Abbey of St. Emmeram, one of the oldest in Bavaria, has been in the possession of the Thurn und Taxis family since 1812, and was enlarged and transformed into a princely residence in the course of the 19th century. It is one of the jewels in Regensburg's crown, and is considered one of the most important monuments of German historicism. Currently inhabited by the Thurn und Taxis family, the castle, also known as St. Emmeram Castle, is one of the largest and most sumptuous in Germany. With its 500 rooms, it is said to have more rooms than Buckingham Palace. Originally from northern Italy, the Thurn und Taxis family made their name by creating Europe's first postal network. For their services to the Emperor, they were ennobled and became one of the most illustrious families in the Holy Roman Empire. Today, several neo-Rococo ceremonial rooms in the south and east wings, such as the yellow salon, the silver salon, the throne room and the two-storey ballroom, the neo-Renaissance marble staircase and the winter garden, can be enjoyed during the guided tour.
