St. Peter's Cathedral in Regensburg is the city's most beautiful building in the Radiant Gothic style. It is truly impressive in its size and its western facade is formidably ornamented. The proportions are harmonious as soon as you step inside, and the 1,000 square metres of beautiful stained glass windows filter the light and make the interior warm and glowing. Construction of the cathedral began in 1260. Its spires and pediment date from the period 1859-1872. The stained glass windows were designed between 1220 and 1370 (there are some very good modern ones), while the windows were not added until the 19th century. The cathedral has many sculptures. Two of them stand out: The Smiling Angel and The Virgin of the Annunciation made by Master Erminold in 1280. In the centre of the choir is the statue of the Suffering Christ. The altar is made of silver and was made by the Augsburg goldsmiths. It was started in 1695 but not completed until 90 years later. In the nave stands the stone pulpit of truth, built in 1482; the two horsemen (also in stone) representing St. Martin and St. George stand above the portal (west side). The tomb was built by order of Maximilian I in 1611 and the work was entrusted to Hans Krumper. It is possible to visit the Cathedral Treasury Museum.
