The Chapel of Grace is the shrine that attracts pilgrims to Altötting. Thousands of people come to venerate the Black Madonna.
This is the place that attracts all pilgrims to Altötting: the Chapel of Grace. The Black Madonna, a 64 cm high statue of the Virgin and Child, is the object of worship here. This colouring is only due to the soot smoke from the candles of the altar to which the lime wood statue has been exposed for many centuries. In the chapel there are also several urns containing the hearts of several famous Wittelsbachs, such as Ludwig II: the separation of the body and the heart was a common mortuary practice among European rulers.
