RUHMESHALLE AND BAVARIA
A Bavarian-style pantheon with a monumental bronze statue weighing 70 tonnes and standing 18 metres tall, from the Bavarian state of Munich.
The Ruhmeshalle, a kind of Bavarian Pantheon, is located on the west side of the Theresienwiese square, where the Oktoberfest beer festival is held every year. From its elevated position, the monumental statue of Bavaria overlooks the Theresienwiese. The Bavaria statue was a technical masterstroke of its time: made of pure bronze, it weighs over 70 tonnes and is 18 metres high. After its inauguration at the 25th Oktoberfest in 1850, it quickly became the symbol and guardian of the state of Bavaria. The statue depicts a lady dressed in Germanic style: she wears a bearskin, an oak wreath in her left hand and a lion on a leash in her right. You can climb a small spiral staircase inside the body. At the head of the statue is a small platform where a maximum of three people can stand. On busy days, you'll have to be patient before you can access it. But you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Theresienwiese and the whole of Munich.
The Temple, located just behind the statue, was designed by the renowned Leo von Klenze, the same architect who built the Propylaea on Königsplatz. Inside the Pantheon, busts of Bavarian personalities past and present are displayed. Here, you'll find the greatest scholars, politicians, painters and other artists who have had a direct or indirect connection with the Bavarian capital.
