Tete is pronounced "têté", with an almost silent "é". It is certainly the city in Mozambique where English is most widely spoken. Centuries of migration to neighboring English-speaking countries and occupation of the region by the British have led Tete to develop more links with Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi than with Mozambique. The Tete Corridor is a major traffic artery. As a place of transit, it remains somewhat pointless to linger in the city, although the tranquility of the Zambezi River seems to gently cool the atmosphere and coax the mood of its inhabitants. The provincial tourism office has a wealth of information about the area, especially for those who wish to explore Lake Cahora Bassa to Zumbo.
