Cahora Bassa would mean "Where the work stops", inspired by the rapids that once surrounded it. Its dam is the fifth largest dam in the world. Locks onto the Zambezi River. The lake covers an area of 2,660 km². Work began in 1969 and despite several sabotage of the Frelimo, the dam was completed in 1974. Today it is one of the largest electricity producers in Africa and a vital source of income for Mozambique and South Africa. The power of the five turbines is ten times more than what would be needed to supply all of Mozambique with electrical energy.
