VIANA DESERT
This desert of fine sand offers an unusual landscape of white dunes dotted with acacias with the mountains in the background
In the north-west of the island, a few kilometers from Rabil, we discover the surreal scene of a curious fine sand desert called Viana. Classified as one of the country's protected areas, this desert (which is constantly evolving) extends over some 5 kilometers of contrasting landscapes: light sand punctuated by black volcanic sand in places, shades of green provided by palm trees, coconut palms and other endemic species. Its origins? transported by the trade winds, sand from the Sahara has shaped this unusual landscape of white dunes dotted with acacia trees, with the mountains as a backdrop. To get to this magical place, head for Estancia de Baixo (just north of the village of Rabil) and just before the entrance to Estancia, take a track to the right (follow the Viana Club sign). Beware: these are real Saharan-type dunes, and 4x4 driving requires a great deal of skill to avoid getting bogged down. And don't forget to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun's glare. If you'd like to take part in some activities, or if you're impressed by the wide-open spaces, it's best to be accompanied by an experienced guide who can point you in the right direction. A must when you come to Boa Vista, you can also simply choose to walk around the dunes, or even climb them, without the danger of encountering the slightest animal, in the silence and serenity offered by this landscape that looks like something from another planet.
