MUSÉE DES CARROSSES IMPÉRIAUX
A little-known but nevertheless exceptional, spectacular and fascinating museum. Hundreds of Viennese court vehicles are on display in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace, including the imperial family's ceremonial carriages, such as Emperor Charles VI's sumptuous 1730s imperial coach. There's also the black hearse that carried Emperor Franz Joseph (1916), Empress Elisabeth (1898) and Empress Zita (1989). On display are a multitude of gala carriages, baby carriages, sports, leisure and travel vehicles, as well as the sophisticated clothing of the imperial court. The museum highlights the similarities between Empress Sissi and Lady Diana in a number of thoughtful videos. The result is a highly original and interesting parallel, vividly and movingly explained. Finally, in another original approach, a space is dedicated to the Habsburgs' high-speed vehicles through the ages and the evolution of mechanics. The most recent is the painted racing car (Formula Renault 1.6) of Ferdinand de Habsbourg-Lorraine, a racing driver born in 1997. His 140hp Art Car bomb, which propels itself at 230 km/h, sits alongside two historic vehicles. These are the sports coach built in 1814 for Emperor François Iᵉʳ, which could reach a speed of 16 km/h pulled by two horses, and Charles Iᵉʳ's 45hp "Imperial Coach", a 5-speed petrol vehicle reaching 90 km/h.
