GRÁBRÓK
A curious volcano with a 3,000 year old crater, a particularly enchanting place on sunny days in Bifrost
Not far from the hamlet of Bifröst rises Grábrók. This curious volcano is capped by a 3,000-year-old crater. It's easy to climb and the path is well laid out. From its low summit, you can overlook the Bifröst campus, the Hreðavatn, the Norðurá and the Grábrókarhaun, a thousand-year-old lava field formed during a fissural eruption that also formed the Grábrók cone. A protected area since 1962, the place is particularly enchanting in fine weather, when fields of lupines carpet the ground in shades of purple as far as the eye can see.
