Owner's Message
Askja is a huge caldera and central volcano in the Dyngjufjöll Mountains, north of the Vatnajökull glacier. The caldera is a subsidence of bedrock above a massive magma chamber, and is still forming. Askja was not explored until the 19th century, but a series of eruptions in 1874-1875, including a very powerful explosive eruption in March 1875, attracted the attention of the local population as well as scientists. During the massive eruption of 1875, the volcano spewed out about 2 billion cubic metres of ash and pumice, and a new caldera formed within the old one. Over the following decades, the new caldera filled with water and now contains the 11 km² lake Öskjuvatn, which is also one of the deepest lakes in Iceland (220 m). Askja volcano erupted a few times in the 1920s, but the last eruption took place in the autumn of 1961.

At Askja we only had 2 hours and 15 minutes. Remind that you have to walk 35-45 minutes one way too!
So there are only 1 hour directly at the lakes. If you want to take a bath and make some photos this is not enough time.
Also its not allowed to eat in the bus. So when it is raining you have to eat outside.
For 150€ p.p. I cant recommend it.
Rent an own 4x4 for one day would make more sense.
