ÖRÆFAJÖKULL

A huge glacier dominating a remarkable landscape of black volcanic sands in Skaftafell.
On Route 1, as you leave Skaftafell, the huge ice mass of Öræfajökull dominates the black sandar where the milky arms of glacial rivers wind. Down below, a desolate land of black sand torn from volcanoes stretches from Skreiðará to Breiðamerkursandur. The great Viking farms of the early colonial period were completely wiped out here by the catastrophic flood that followed the subglacial volcanic eruption of Öræfajökull in 1362. Please note: Öræfajökull refers to both the volcano and the glacier of the same name.
