ELÐRAUN LAVAS
Go there and contact
Lava fields, born from a terrible eruption of the Lakagigar, and covered with a thick moss of greenish-grey color.
Further east on route no. 1, the Elðraun lavas stretch as far as the eye can see. Without a blade of grass, let alone a tree, it's quite lunar. These lava fields were created by the terrible Lakagígar eruption, one of Iceland's most disastrous eruptions, which led to famine and the death of 20-25% of the population. Tempting though it may be, don't step on the moss and stick to the marked paths! It's a fragile ecosystem, and it could take years to rebuild if you step on it.
