One of the symbols of the Icelandic capital, the famous Hallgrimskirkja, built at the top of a hill that serves as a pedestal

The famous Hallgrimskirkja is one of the symbols of Iceland's capital. An ideal landmark, it was built on top of a hill that serves as its pedestal.

It was named after Hallgrím Pétursson, Iceland's greatest 17th-century writer, famous for his Passion Psalms. Construction began in 1945 after the war, but was not completed until 1974 (with the exception of the nave, completed in 1986). The building is inspired by the beautiful geometry of natural basalt organs, common in the volcanic lands of Iceland. The whiteness of the concrete recalls the country's glaciers and snow, so dear to the land of ice. The purity of the building's style and originality give it a very special character.

The interior couldn't be more sober and uncluttered. Only the organs are not white. You can even climb to the very top of the bell tower for a magnificent view of the city and surrounding countryside.

From the foot of the tower, you can then head for the seafront promenade or the shopping streets. If you're feeling a little hungry, don't hesitate to stop off at Café Loki, one of our favorite addresses in the capital. Opt for one of their plates and their famous delicious homemade ice cream.

Good to know: at night, the stained glass window above the entrance door lights up, giving the place an even more mysterious air. For another view of the church, take the little path behind it that leads to Barónsstígur.
