A remarkable Dominican church, dominating the old town of Treviso.
The severe Dominican church of S. Nicolò, which dominates the old town district beyond the river Sile, competes with the Duomo for its imposing dimensions. Erected in the first half of the 14th century, thanks above all to the generous generosity of the Pope of Treviso, Nicolò Bocassino (Benedetto XI), who had been a friar in the Dominican convent since 1221, it was not finished during the next fifty years but had to wait until the second half of the last century to see the first three bays and the upper part of the great nave finished. With its simple but elongated forms, massive walls and old stained glass windows, San Nicolò marks the transition from the robust Romanesque to the slender Gothic style. In the adjoining convent, the cloister can be visited as well as a chapter house decorated with frescoes. Along the entire perimeter of the hall runs a cycle of "Portraits of Dominicans" painted in 1352 by the painter Tommaso da Modena, one of the best painters of his time after Giotto, with astonishing precision and perfect realism. 40 illustrious members of the order are represented here, each seated at his lectern, in extremely lively poses for the time, so much so that one can distinguish the beard hairs and wrinkles on the faces of the figures! Here the painter makes a psychological study of his models, who were in the vanguard for their time.
