Bratislava - and its half a million inhabitants - is not the most extraordinary capital in Europe but probably one of the most relaxing. With the Danube as its backdrop, it has old village charm, sophisticated restaurants, traditional pubs, good music ranging from jazz to opera and a wide spectrum of styles, from elegant to sporty. In the city, there is much to see and do. The houses and palaces of Austro-Hungarian noble families dot the city, dominated by its castle. Since the 2000s, Bratislava has begun its transition to a market economy and strengthened its ties with its twin city, Vienna. Bratislava is in the midst of a metamorphosis and today presents the conquering face of a city full of future where things move very quickly and where the latest modernism and post-Soviet archaism rub shoulders. A city full of contrasts.
