The town of Mojaïsk is located 110 km from Moscow on the Minskoe Schosse.First mentioned in 1231, Mojaïsk served, like Zvenigorod, a fortified outpost protecting Western access from Moscow. The first wooden wall was rebuilt in stone at the time of Ivan the Terrible (1541).She played an important role in the war against Poles. The patron saint of the city was Nicolas de Mojaïsk, whose th century wooden statue can be admired at the Trétiakov.He was the protector of the city, considered a holy place with its 16 monasteries and 75 churches, almost all of them wood. If you take the main street, Moskovskaïa, you will reach the place where the monument Saint-Nicolas stands.Turn left on the rue de Borodino and you will be on the territory of the former Kremlin. At the centre is the Market Square with remains of the th century Gostinny Dvor.Nicolas's new cathedral (Novonikolski Sobor) is red coloured with white details in the th century Gothic style.On the southern facade you will see the ancient gates Nikolski and the church that protruding them (late th century). This old construction is even more visible from the inside. Next to this is the church of Pierre-et-Paul (or old Nikolskaïa).In 1849, Chestakov company a copy of the old th century church that collapsed. There is currently a museum. If you are hungry, you can eat on the central square a piece at the Borodino bar.Next, visit the Loujetski monastery (de loug, the meadow), Guérassimova ul., 1. It is perched on the high bank of the river Moscow. The monastery was founded in 1408 by Férapont Bélozerski, disciple of Saint Serge. The main building is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, built in 1520. The northern part of the cathedral was rebuilt in 1755 in baroque style.Some fragments of the original frescoes are kept above the windows. The iconostasis was burned in 1812. The dining was built in 1557 as well as the church of the Transfiguration which overlooks the entrance. The brick bell tower is the th century. The monks'cells also date back to the th century. If the cathedral is closed, ask the key in the cell building.
