This small village is the site of the famous "battle of the giants" during Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812, described by Leo Tolstoy in his masterpiece War and Peace. In Borodino, the Great Army and the Russian army faced each other in one of the bloodiest engagements of the Napoleonic wars. The Russian army had to withdraw and let Napoleon take Moscow, but the huge French losses heralded Russia's retreat. This is why each of the belligerents considers this battle to be a victory. Every year, on the first Sunday of September, tens of thousands of people gather on the spot to relive this battle.
