A remarkable market with a superb dome, a modernist construction, in Valencia.

It is a veritable cathedral of light where the sun's rays gild the fresh produce from the market's 1,200 or so stalls. The project for this huge modernist building dates back to 1914 and was designed by the Catalan architects Alexandre Soler i March and Francesc Guàrdia i Vial, both trained alongside one of the great masters of modernism, Lluís Domènech i Montaner (author of Barcelona's Palacio de la Música, a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The metal structure of the market supports an impressive dome whose glass canopies let in daylight. The main façade is a superb example of the modernist style with the use of multicoloured ceramics and metal. The market is divided into two areas: on the one hand the fruit, vegetables, meat and sausages (covering an area of 6,800m2), and on the other the fish and seafood (1,700m2). These two areas are topped by a dome, one covered with stained-glass windows and the other with ceramics. Along the market's vast alleys, you will discover picturesque stalls, intoxicating scents and colours typical of the Mediterranean: a real treat for the senses.

Une visite incontournable si vous venez à Valence. Attention le marché ferme tôt, il faut y aller le matin pour profiter du folklore de ce marché couvert. A midi allez dans le seul bar du marché les tapas y sont très bons.
