The beach of Les Ghiaie, covered with small white pebbles, forms the largest beach in Portoferraio. It is convenient to reach (and even served by a bus line from the city centre), well equipped but very busy. A protected area since 1971, the seabed of this part of the coast is home to a diverse and prosperous flora and fauna. This beach is known for the legend that its pebbles polished by the sea are stained by the sweat drops of the Argonauts, heroes of Greek mythology.
