Gothic-Renaissance palace on a former medieval defensive fort with Venetian Gothic structure and Renaissance decorations.
This magnificent Gothic-Renaissance building (15th and 16th centuries) was erected on a former medieval defensive fort. The first structure in Venetian Gothic style was designed by the architect Giovanni Candi (the author of the Bovolo staircase of the Contarini Palace in Venice) when he built the seat of the residences of the governors of Venice. It was later enriched with Renaissance decorations. The Clock Tower on the right was erected between 1536 and 1547, following a project by Valerio da San Vittore. Today it is the seat of the Prefecture.
