Two tall granite columns once marked the entrance to the city.
Dating from 1172, these two tall granite columns dominate the lagoon and are two symbols of the City of the Doges. One is surmounted by the lion of St. Mark, patron saint of the city since 828; and the other by the statue of St. Todaro (Theodore), patron saint of studies and first protector of Venice, shown here slaying a dragon. Brought back from Constantinople as spoils of war, they once marked the entrance to the city.

These two magnificent majestic columns are the entrance gate to the Saint Mark's square. They both are surmounted by statues, one of a lion (St Mark's), the other of Saint Théodore. Not to be missed for pretty photos.
