The Quai des Gabarres is named after the flat-bottomed boats that once criss-crossed the Touques, with materials, wood and cider on board. They were pulled by men and horses following a towpath on the right bank of the stream. After the removal of the Touques drawbridge in 1848, navigation, which was difficult, almost ceased. Since 1926, the Touques has not been navigable at all.
