Located south of Viti Levu, Vatulele is a superb little island covering some 30 square kilometers. Four villages are grouped together. There used to be a luxury resort on the island, but it has been closed for many years, with no prospect of reopening any time soon. The island is idyllic, and its beaches and water color are in keeping with the idea of paradise. Vatulele is also famous for its prawns. One of the island's legends has it that if anyone dared to capture, injure or kill the island's shrimp - considered sacred animals - then their boat would sink.
