Ono Island is a volcanic island with a surface area of around 30 km², located to the northeast of Kadavu Island and surrounded by the Great Astrolabe Reef. There are seven villages on the island: Naqara, Nabouwalu, Buliya, Dravuni, Vabea, Waisomo and Narikoso. The island is infamous for the massacre in 1836 of 10 people from an American ship. Chief Ro Veidovi - held responsible for the massacre - was taken to the USA for trial, but died within hours of arrival. The belongings collected during the expedition that led to Ro Veidovi's capture can be seen at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.
